CSI in Action !!

Ms Stevens described what her students have been investigating this past year:

The students in the opportunity class have been doing a yearlong PBL studying forensic science. The utilized the scientific method and related it to the examination of forensic procedures in many areas of forensics. The studied crime scenes, impression evidence, fingerprint evidence,  decomposition and entomology, eyewitness, blood typing, DNA, blood splatter, arson,  and environmental contamination.   They built a portable fingerprint fuming chamber and observed how the superglue fumes adhered oils in the fingerprint, creating a fingerprint that could be lifted several times for examinations.  Their investigations crossed curriculum, as an example,  when we did our decomposition and forensic entomology unit the student, in language arts, read the Body by Stephen King about four boys and their journey to see a dead body in the woods. The students observed the rate of decomposition of a pigs foot, and the determined Post mortem interval using the collection of fly eggs, larva, and adults. At the end of the school year the students read the novel Monster by Walter Dean Myers that had the students read and act as the jury. They examined the evidence presented during the story, as the jury, decided if Steven Harmon was innocent or guilty. The student presented their arguments in a persuasive essay citing evidence from the text.
