December 17, 2014 CHANNEL ISLAND RANGER VISIT 12/16/14

The Channel Island Rangers visited Fremont  to see presentations from the students about the the field trip to Santa Cruz Island they went on in November. Several student presented and most  shared about the different experiences they had on the trip.  The Rangers (Carol & Kelley) then shared some items they had brought for the students to see.  The students all said they had a great time and wish they could visit again sometime soon.

November 17, 2014 Hour of Code @ Fremont Nov 17, 2014

Hour of Code :  http://code.org/

     Inspiring students to try coding

At Fremont Middle School we spent every Science
and Math class on Nov. 17 learning How to Code. Students can then join the National Coding Event the week of
Dec. 8-14, 2014.

Join the Hour of Code  December 8 - 14, 2014

What is it?

Hour of Code is a web site students can go on to do activities that introduce them to the beginning building blocks of writing code that is used to write computer programs.  The objective is to open this door for children who may have never thought this could be a reality for them.  We especially hope to get the girls involved, as this is a field that does not have a strong female presence.  We are bringing foundational 21st century skills to our students.

Some students even got  to complete several coding activities!

Channel Islands Field Trip to Scorpion Bay - 7th & 8th grade

Link to Channel Islands National Park Website

Everyone had a very enjoyable and exciting trip!  The day was gorgeous and during the boat trip we came across 2 sets of Fin whales - mothers and babies, 3 Humpback whales, and dolphins in the wake of the boat. Once on Santa Cruz Island, the students became part of a very select group of people to visit the island. They learned about the island's fragile environment and 13,000 year history. The group enjoyed a  hike where they viewed the wildlife, including the Island Fox and learned about the island's plants, animals and  the inhabitants: the Chumash Indians. Some students got to paint themselves with diatomaceous earth, as the Indians once did. A favorite activity was chilling out and listening to the environment, while enjoying the solitude of the island. A wonderful day had by all!
